Movie breakdown: Day Shift (horror movie)

"Day Shift" is a new vampire hunting movie starring Jamie Foxx and Dave Franco. The movie tells the story of a blue collar dad trying to provide a better life for his young daughter. However, his routine job in San Fernando Valley pool cleaning is a disguise for his true income, hunting down and killing vampires as part of an International Union of Viper Hunters.

It sounds like a fun idea, but can J.J. Perry bring it to life?

The movie's opening scene features a bizarre action sequence in which Jamie Foxx shoots at an elderly lady who turns out be a vampire. The movie then launches into an amazing fight scene between them. The movie's use of ragdoll physics in its action scenes makes them pop in a way that many other action movies (or blockbusters) do not.

Day Shift has the quality of a bad movie. It's obvious what they were trying but it was so disappointing. It's a poor production with mediocre acting and a stilted dialogue. The plot is also void of any real substance. Yet, somehow I enjoyed it. Maybe it's because it was vampire movies I love, or maybe it is because I just like bad movies. Day Shift was great. It's not a great movie, but it's a lot of fun. And really, that's all I ask from a movie like this.

Day Shift is a mixed film. On one hand, there is a lot of fun action scenes and some fun characters (the two brothers and Seth), but on the other hand the villain was horrible, a lot of mediocre characters, though I guess that helps the better characters shine even more. There appeared to be scenes missing from the film. Bud's neighbor acts like she is a friend even though they only had about 3 minutes each before the final scene. Bud's prank phone calling at the gas station was the best moment of the movie. It was funny, and it was a great movie. The movie ended and it was not nearly as entertaining. Day Shift, in the end, is a mixed bag. There are good parts, and there are bad parts. You could find a better movie if you are looking for some laughs.

Snoop Dogg almost got lost in my thoughts. He is great in Day Shift. The whole movie is worth it because of him. His comedy is great and he's funny. But he is also so natural in his role. It's (more info) like he was born to play it.
